Everything you wanted to know about scrapping your car (at Silverlake), but were afraid to ask!
There comes a time in every car owner’s life when we have to send our precious motor off to the scrap yard. This might be after a long and happy relationship. But it may be after an unexpected collision, when the insurance company has written the vehicle off perhaps, and suddenly, you are trying to navigate the do’s and don’ts of scrapping a vehicle.
First up, the good news!. Did you know that you can earn money back on the scrap value of your vehicle? Surprisingly, a small percentage of customers still believe they have to pay the scrap yard to collect their car. This is not so. At Silverlake, we can collect your car within a 30 mile radius of our yard and we will pay you the scrap weight value..
Bear in mind there are some unscrupulous scrap yards out there that may hoodwink you into taking actions you might later regret. Whilst the DVLA provide lots of good information on scrapping your car, nothing beats having an easily accessible guide to read. Especially one that helps you understand the process from start to finish. If this is what you are searching for then please read on…
According to the DVLA…
When your vehicle has reached the end of its usefulness, you must get it scrapped at an authorised treatment facility (ATF).
What is an ATF (Authorised Treatment Facility)
Essentially, an ATF is just another name for a scrapyard or breaker’s yard, but one that has been licensed by the Environment Agency (EA). The EA, licences the scrap yard to ensure that it meets standards of safety, quality, sustainability and acceptable business practices.
Silverlake is one of the longest running ATF (authorised treatment facilities) in the country. We’ve been collecting scrap cars since 1946 and have a trusted reputation within Hampshire & Dorset. You can get in touch with us by calling 01489 782537.
How can I be sure that I get the best price for my scrap car?
We have a page on our website dedicated to providing you with the best quotes for your scrap car. The quote you get is based on the vehicles scrap weight, not resale value. If you think your car is worth more than our quote has given you, we welcome more detailed information and will happily review our offer.
Getting in touch
At this point, you’ve chosen Silverlake as your scrap car collection company, and you know how much you are getting back from us. The next step is booking your vehicle in.
If you accept our quote online, and provide us with correct contact details, we will call you back to schedule in the collection. Alternatively, you are welcome to call us directly to find out what we will pay. You are also welcome to visit us in store.
You may choose to receive a slightly increased quote by droping the car off to us. However, most people opt for scrap car collection. And our first conversation with you gives us the opportunity to agree a date your car can be collected.
But wait! Suddenly we are asking you lots of questions about your car and giving you a long list of do’s and don’ts. Don’t panic. Let us break those questions down so you can prepare yourself for the process.
Is the vehicle clear & free from rubbish?
It doesn’t’ take long for vehicles that have been left abandoned to begin to fill with various rubbish. So that we do not incur additional recycling costs, we ask that vehicles are cleared to save us from having to pay to dispose of rubbish that might be stored in your vehicle. Similarly, we urge you to make sure the car is empty of any possessions deemed personal or valuable.
Is the car complete?
The trucks we use to collect vehicles do not have crane facilities and so all vehicles need to roll. Therefore, we only collect vehicles with the rubber tyres and rims attached. We also ask if other vehicle parts have been removed. Our quote considers the scrap value of the car in its complete form, and if a vehicle has had the engine removed for instance, the value of that car becomes greatly diminished to us. If parts of the car have already been dismantled, please let us know so we can reassess the quote we provide. Failing to inform us of an incomplete vehicle will result in a failed collection by the driver.
Where is the car at the moment?
Because we are not recovery agents, Our licence only permits us to collect vehicles from customers home addresses or from garages.
Generally, we cannot attend a breakdown to recover your vehicle for scrap. We need to know that the vehicle is currently sitting outside your home address and so this question is used to illicit the current circumstances of the vehicle.
Will you be at home when the driver collects the car?
As long as the vehicle is accessible to the driver and can be rolled on to the truck, It is possible to agree with us a safe place to leave the car key, saving you having to be at home when the collection takes place. We will ask you to leave the V5 document in the glove compartment, along with the locking wheel nut. Please do not complete any part of the log book V5. The driver will fill out all the fields and will post you the documents back through your door once we’ve removed the bits we need.
Show us your ID!
We need to see the ID of who we are paying.
We will ask you to confirm the identity of whoever will receive payment from us in relation to the sale of the vehicle. A Drivers Licence for instance, must share the same address as the cars current registered address. Other documentation used instead of a drivers licence must also match the cars registered address.
What time will the collection take place?
Our collections are booked throughout the day and take place according to the most logical routes taken by the drivers. Therefore, we cannot provide time slots. That is why we are happy to call you up to an hour before we arrive. Please note, although the drivers are happy to call you when they are near, if for some reason they can’t connect or get through to you, they are not obliged to keep calling. Alternatively, we invite you to take advantage of agreeing a safe place to leave your key so that your day isn’t impacted by the collection.
That’s it! That is everything you will be asked to consider when choosing Silverlake to recycle your vehicle. Remember, you are doing a great thing by recycling your vehicle. Why not go online and get a quote for your scrap car today, alternatively, please give us a call on 01489 782537. We are always happy to help you, and we are open 7 days a week.
